I've been putting my own eye drops in since I was a kid. I used to do it lying down, but now I just put my head back, hold the bottle in my right hand (I'm right handed), pull my lower lid down with a finger or two on my left hand, and gingerly lower the tip of the bottle towards my eye until it is barely touching my lower lid. Then I can move it up just a bit and squeeze and almost 100% of the time the drop goes right into my eye. It might take some practice, but you'll get the hang of it. After I get the drop in, I keep my head back for a minute or two and let it roll around in there before using a Klenex to wipe off my cheek if any dribbled out.

Hi,
I just do it like a sighted person. I know where on my face my eye is located, so I tip my head back, like I'm drinking a glass of water, and put the dropper in the space between my lids where the ball of my eye is located. I used to have to touch my eye a tiny bit at first, just to make sure I had it in the right place, but now I don't have to anymore. I just hold the bottle about an inch above my open eye and squeeze just a tiny bit, unles it comes out with out me having to squeeze it which sometimes happens. Then, if I have anymore drops, which I don't now, but I did when I was a kid, I close my eye and let the first one sit in there a minute to let it be absorbed or come back out. Then, I do the same with the next drop. It takes a little practice, but depending on how cordinated you are and things, you shouldn't have to pull your lower liddown, unless you can't physically open your eye yourself, or unless you want to do it that way. It's up to you. It's pretty easy really. I started off laying down with mine too.
Take Care,
Dawnielle

I'm one of those people with whom you almost have to pry the eye open for drops, if they're needed. I'll take some of these ideas to mind, and thank you Gilman_gal for starting this board.

Agreed... I can open my eye, certainly enough to make use of the sight I have, but I can't open it enough without having to open it with my fingers for eyedrops. I'd say just use your thumb and first finger to open your eye, then insert the end of the bottle where the dropper is, between that thumb and finger. That way, there's no way you're gunna poke yourself in the eye. It's honestly nowhere near as hard as sighted people would have you believe......

I agree with Sugar. If you're nervous, talk to your eye care professional and see if you would harm yourself with the natural tears you get from over the counter. I don't know your eyes, but I doubt it'll do any harm. Talk to the doc to be sure, though. I have to pry both upper and lower lids open, as my one eye is very very small. (Probably wtmi.)

I can put them in like a sighted person also. Just open and drop.

I also started giving myself my own eyedrops while lying down, I'll still miss once in awhile because I have a really hard time having my eyes open while I've got my face turned up though.

And if there's a family member around when I'm not feeling up to it, I'll still ask for some help.

thanks all. I'll do it, once I get the nerve up to.

mom said that if you touch your eye with the droper when you put drops in your eyes all the time, that can be infected and then you have infections. see she told me this because my brother used eye drops and he puts the tip of the bottle close to his eye even if hes fully sighted

I have been doing it for a few weeks now with no problems. I just lift the lids and hold the bottle in my right hand and drop it in between my left thumb and pointer. I don't miss as much as I did the first time.

My eyedrops actually specify that it's important not to have anything at all touch the tip of the dropper bottle, including hands or the surface of your eye... I've only ever grazed my eye lashes while doing my drops and have had no problems with that, but yeah.... I'm sure it'd be possible to disinfect the tip of the dropper, yes?

I'm sure you can.

I always pry open my eye lids for drops....even if at the doctor's office. Not because my eyes don't stay open but because I can't stand for anyone else to do it. Then I rest my right or left hand against the bridge of my nose and aim the dropper toward the tear duct (the part of your eye right next to your nose). It works great for me and I always do it while sitting up and having my head tipped way back.

I find it easier now, if I let the bottle rest on top of a finger, then just tip my head way back and let it drop. I don't even have to squeeze the bottle this way. not usually anyways.

Most of the people I know have someone help them with this, but I have read that you can get eydrop despnsors and things to help with that. I don't have eyedrops, so I don't know how easy it would be to put them in yourself.

I guess it's not only sited people I have to explain this to. It's only difficult and problematic if you make it so and think that way.

Just damn open your eyes wide, put the dropper over your eyes, really you should know where about your eyes are, and you should be conscious where your eyes are opened and insert them there. You've probably been in your body enough to know that. No, It is really not that difficult. I've had dried eyes forever, and I've been doing it. I take refresh tears, and I could do it quickly and easily with no problems, and no spills either. Be conscious how many drops goes in, and after one or two in one eye, stop... Basically that's it.

Honestly Rachel, get the fuck over yourself. I'd think that you'd be the one who'd have trouble finding your eyes. After all, it must be difficult to find anything with that big ego in the way.
